No craft shop on Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail brings together the work of as many juried Cape Breton craft artists as does Arts North, at the northern tip of the island.

Linda Doyon, Smelt Brook StudioNova Scotia is home to many producers of extra-high quality crafts, and a surprising number of these artists live and work on Cape Breton Island.  Most, however, do not open their studios to the public, nor do they offer their work to craft shops at wholesale prices.

Claudia GahlingerRather, over two dozen of these artists consign their work to the Arts North gallery on the northern tip of the world famous Cabot Trail.  At Arts North, juried local crafts in media such as pottery, jewellery, wood, fiber, quilts, weaving, prints and glass are retailed on behalf of the member artists.

Since opening in the late 70’s Arts North has been attracting some of the finest craft artists on Cape Breton Island, gradually expanding its “family” of artists to its present two dozen plus.  Simultaneously, the “theme” of the overall collection of work at the gallery has evolved towards one of the interpretation of the environmental beauty of the island by its artist-residents.

Suzanne CraigThroughout the pages of this site we present a glimpse of both the artists who consign their work to Arts North and samples of each artist’s work.  We also have included occasional images of the spectacular scenery, wildlife and ruggedness of this very special part of the world.

Darryl MacLeodWe invite you to visit us at the Arts North Gallery to experience first hand what the adjectives “real” and  “local” mean when applied to Cape Breton crafts.
