Quilters

In Nova Scotia, and in particularly on Cape Breton Island, quilting has a deep history.  In early times, with the necessity to use, and then to re-use, every scrap of fabric, it would be unusual to find a household that did not have three or four quilts in use.

In some cases, formal quilt patterns were passed around amongst the women of a community and repeatedly duplicated.  Time honored patterns such as “Log Cabin”, “Northern Star” and “Pinwheel” became quite common.

In other communities it was common for ladies to create their own patterns, relying upon imagination and necessity to create a pattern.

In all cases, the resulting quilts often became heirloom items, handed down from mother to daughter, until they wore out from loving use.

Our Cape Breton quilters employ both traditional and original patterns to create the quilts they offer at the Arts North gallery.  Offered in sizes to fit most beds from crib to King, the variety of color, pattern and texture is truly impressive.

Lorna MacLean

Lorna MacLean

Lorna started quilting as a creative outlet. “Fabrics inspire me... the colors, the prints, the textures. They're just begging to be cut up and put back together in new and innovative designs.

Through books, magazines and workshops, she’s learned new techniques to simplify even the most complicated of patterns. This goes very well with her addiction to gadgets; every new development in the quilting world seems to demand a new piece of special equipment, which Lorna feels she must try.

Lorna enjoys passing on her acquired knowledge to her loyal group of students at the Cape Breton Center for Craft and Design in Sydney. She has been teaching quilting classes there since 1994 and still enjoys the challenge of expressing herself through quilts and the satisfaction of inspiring her students to achieve their goals.

Joan MacKenzie

Joan MacKenzie

Joan started quilting since moving back to Cape Breton after attending art and design school in Ontario. Originally working in the traditional methods of quilting she now enjoys everything that is non-traditional, (although with a traditional foundation). Currently occupied with expressing her love of the Cape Breton landscape through various fibre techniques, she finds inspiration in the sea, cliffs and shorelines of the Island.

Joan enjoys working with cotton fibres, especially the beautiful rich colors of batiks. She feels that their richness seems to come the closest to emulating the island's natural beauty. Thereby helping her succeed in her attempts to interpret the naturescapes she discovers in her island travels. Joan is a juried member of the Cape Breton Center for Craft and Design.
